Founded in 2000 by Veronica Gritsenko, Black Elephant Lacquer is a studio dedicated to producing the finest quality, traditional style lacquer in Myanmar. Veronica Gritsenko and her talented team of expert craftsmen and women create contemporary designs while using the traditional methods, breathing new life into an age-old art form. Unlike other studios of the same kind, Black Elephant uses ancient techniques and methods to produce the correct weight and consistency of the lacquer pieces, the result of which is a piece of art that lasts a lifetime.
In conjunction with Black Elephant Lacquer, the Institute of Traditional Bagan Lacquer is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserve Burmese Lacquer Art and the lacquer community in Bagan. The institute provides lacquer artisans with permanent incomes and trains them in the revived ancient technique of the lacquer process. Through exhibitions, lectures, publications and seminars, the Institute presents the uniqueness of Burmese Art of Lacquer.
